ORIOM - Cosmic Rituals : Music for a Planet Yet to Be Invented
Some albums tell stories. Some create worlds. And then there is music that attempts to turn the listener's own body into a resonating instrument. ORIOM's new album Cosmic Rituals belongs to that rare third category.
Rainer von Vielen, aka ORIOM, has chosen a radical yet remarkably coherent coordinate system for the album: the Cosmic Octave. Astronomical cycles and frequencies are transposed through octaves into the audible spectrum, forming the tonal foundation of the music. On paper, this may sound like a territory somewhere between acoustics, mathematics and metaphysics. The moment you hear it, however, the theory disappears. Cosmic Rituals does not want to explain. It wants to have an effect.
And it does.
Bass spreads through the chest, repetitive figures pull the body into their orbit, vast dub spaces open up only to be compressed again by massive electronic beats. Techno, organic and psychedelic grooves, dub, drum & bass and archaic percussion do not exist here as neatly separated genres. They are different states of matter within the same music.
At the centre is an instrument almost impossible to mistake for anything else: the human voice.
ORIOM has worked with Mongolian throat singing and overtone singing for years. On Cosmic Rituals, however, these techniques are neither folkloric quotation nor the exotic flourish so often placed on top of electronic productions. The voice is foundation and disruption at once. It growls, vibrates, splits into overtones, becomes bass, drone and signal. At times it seems centuries old; seconds later, it sounds as though it has arrived from a future in which the distinction between human and synthesizer has long since ceased to matter.
It is precisely this tension that makes the album so distinctive: archaic and futuristic, meditative and physical, ritualistic and uncompromisingly danceable.
This becomes particularly apparent on "Wongchop." Tuned according to the Cosmic Octave of the Platonic Year, the track begins in a realm of throat singing, overtones and dub before repeatedly changing shape. Dance grooves, drum & bass and dancehall energy fold into one another without ever feeling like an exercise in genre. The voice sings in an invented language – and strangely, that makes it immediately understandable. Meaning emerges not through semantics, but through breath, frequency, rhythm and physical presence.
"Maa Chiky?" takes another path. Nordic-tinged textures meet grounded beats and an ever-intensifying percussive drive. Where others might easily become trapped in Viking romanticism with these ingredients, ORIOM uses the archaic merely as a point of departure. The track grows, pushes and condenses until acid, percussion and electronic rhythm collide in a furious climax.
The dramaturgy of Cosmic Rituals as a whole is remarkably focused. ORIOM largely abandons sprawling ambient expanses and treats each track instead as a compact ritual. A state emerges, intensifies, then dissolves. Less atmosphere for atmosphere's sake; more impact.
It marks a decisive evolution.
Because beneath its spiritual and cosmological framework lies a surprisingly physical album. This is not music that belongs exclusively on headphones. It makes you wonder what happens when it is played through a large sound system: at night, with subwoofers moving the air and a hundred bodies sharing the same pulse.
That may be where the real intention of Cosmic Rituals reveals itself. Dance is not understood here as escapism. Repetition is not a form of anaesthesia. Quite the opposite: the music concentrates attention. It creates those peculiar moments where powerful club music and ritual music meet – when individual perception recedes for a few minutes behind the experience of a group.
This is also where the logic of the ORIOM project becomes clear. The music has grown out of a live practice in which sound is conceived spatially and physically – extending to ORIOM's quadraphonic performances and his immersive "Eyes Closed Concerts," experienced lying down. Cosmic Rituals translates something of that philosophy into the album format without becoming meditation music.
Quite the opposite.
This music pushes, rubs, accelerates and dances.
Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of Cosmic Rituals is the way it brings together two musical worlds that, surprisingly, are rarely allowed to truly merge. On one side stands a centuries-old vocal practice in which a single human body makes multiple frequencies audible at once. On the other is electronic music, with its machines, sequencers, filters, sub-bass and seemingly limitless possibilities of synthetic sound.
With ORIOM, these worlds do not meet as opposites.
They recognise each other.
Suddenly, the overtone of a throat voice can resemble an analogue synthesizer, while the synthesizer itself begins to feel organic. A drone tuned to a planetary cycle can sound as archaic as a voice – and an electronic beat as ritualistic as a drum.
Perhaps this is the true achievement of Cosmic Rituals: the album is not trying to make "spiritual music." Nor is it attempting to make club music more interesting by adding an unusual ethnic element.
It develops a musical grammar of its own.
Frequency becomes harmony.
Voice becomes synthesizer.
Repetition becomes ritual.
Bass becomes physical experience.
And for a moment, the dancefloor becomes a shared field of resonance.
You do not need to know anything about planetary frequencies to understand Cosmic Rituals. You do not need to believe in the Cosmic Octave, nor do you need to care about astronomy.
You only need to hear what happens.
Preferably loud.
